Kenwood Chef: Replacing the old style motor/controller with the new style ‘Copse’ motor and control module (p/n 770000 – Copse Motor Kit)

Replacement fuse: When replacing an old style motor controller with the new motor and control module, it is important to ensure that the fuse fitted in the plug is rated 13A.

Remove the old motor/controller, motor mounting ring and body cover. The terminal cover and screw should be retained. The new style motor is supplied with a cowl that incorporates a motor mounting ring. The new motor is located using the original three bushes and securing screws. The new control module slots into the machine body so that the module flange locates over the old knob cutaway in the mixer body. The main body of the module extends downwards and is fully positioned when the new body cover is fitted.

To facilitate fitting the new motor after prior removal of the old motor/controller, the top cover and high-speed outlet cover should be temporarily refitted, and the machine turned upside down. The motor must be positioned in the machine body with the recess in the motor cowl facing towards the old knob cutaway in the mixer body. The control module can then be slotted into the knob cutout, and the new body cover fitted, and secured in position. The machine can then be turned over, and the three motor securing screws and bushes refitted. Realignment of the screw location holes in the motor frame can be assisted using a screwdriver blade.

Body cover

The new motor and control module requires the new design of body cover. The old cover cannot be used with the new style motor. A terminal cover or screw is not supplied with a new body cover, so the old one should be reused.

Control knob and control module

The new control module requires the new style control knob. The old style knobs will not fit.

The module is provided with an ‘on/off’ microswitch and a pulse facility. Older models of mixers currently without the pulse setting will incorporate it on conversion, and will require a control knob with pulse markings.

The new control knob can be fitted either before or after the control module is installed into the machine. The knobs have an integral peg that only allows it to be fitted in the correct position.

Control module supply connection

The control module is supplied with a short length of two-core cable terminated in a two-way terminal block. The cable is fitted with a plug that connects directly to the module PCB. If an old style motor controller is being replaced with the new style unit, then the terminal block is retained and the original supply cord will terminate in the terminal block. If the machine was supplied with a special plug-in supply cord, then the internal cord from the inlet socket to the old motor/controller PCB must be shortened and terminated in the new terminal block.
